According to the article, "The cartoon was labeled as being created by a Portuguese cartoonist, António Moreira Antunes, who works under the mononym 'Antonio' and has worked for the weekly newspaper Expresso for several decades, according to The Jerusalem Post. It was published originally in Expresso."

So, apparently some editor at the NY Times saw these cartoons and decided it'd be a good idea to re-publish them in the NY Times.

Very bad judgment.
