Remember when American Liberals could reliably be counted on to point to Sweden as “proof” that “democratic socialism CAN work”?
No more. It’s as though Sweden has fallen off the world’s map, lately.
Wonder why?
Well, the primary reason is that Sweden ’s been running away from the Keynesian policies America ’s Liberals have been embracing for over a decade now!

Stefan Karlsson chronicled the economic history of Sweden back in 2006 in an excellent article. In that work Karlsson wrote the following:
"As a result of its free market policies, the resourcefulness of its people, and its successful avoidance of war, Sweden had the highest per-capita income growth in the world between 1870 and 1950, by which time Sweden had become one of the world's richest countries."
Karlsson also noted that, “there's a common misperception that the Scandinavian countries are borderline Cuban in terms of economic freedom, while the rest of the developed world (particularly the United States ) is far more free-market oriented. However, the reality is that the Scandinavian countries are among the top 10 and 20 "most liberalized" economies in the world, even despite their massive welfare states.”

I can tell you it certainly sounded like a miserable, hopeless place to live from what I heard about it from this girl I met in Britain in the late 1980's.
ReplyDeleteNot that she was complaining. She thinks socialism is wonderful. Not wonderful enough for her to stick around but wonderful.
She said she was shopping around for a Black American husband. She wanted a Black guy because she heard about what they say about Black men! I swear to God she said that.
She didn’t seem interested in my two navy friends though and certainly not a closeted white boy like me.
I leant her some money to buy a razor which she did pay back. She was so excited about having one so she could shave her legs!
Well that was many years ago. I hope she found a good husband and did not wind up back in the hellhole she came from.

ReplyDelete"Not that she was complaining. She thinks socialism is wonderful...." (mccommas)
There's a great blogger around here named Pela (http://gummihund.blogspot.com/) also from Sweden and he definitely DOES NOT seem to like socialism much at all.
Still, many of those raised in such places DO claim to love it...then again, many who've spent time in prison get accustomed to that as well.
Once you get used to having all your decisions and needs "taken care of for you," fending for yourself must seem even harder!
THAT is the prison of socialism.
The GOOD NEWS here is that Sweden, like a number of other nations is turning AWAY from the failed Keynesianism that we're (hopefully temporarily) embracing!
Socialism builds dependency, usually to the point of economic implosion. It fails. By its nature, it cannot succeed, unless human nature can be changed to have three classes: the elite ruling class, who dictate how it is, and don't live as they dictate others should; the worker bees, those willing to work themselves to the bone; and the dependency class, those happy to be "taken care of", and contribute nothing to their own maintenance.
ReplyDeleteThe Pilgrims tried this when they arrived here; it failed. They turned to capitalism, and they began to flourish. Compare the US capitalist society vs the former Soviet Union communist, command-control society....who won?
Look at capitalist South Korea and communist command-control North Korea.
Sweden is changing direction for good reason.
AGAIN 100% on the money SF!
ReplyDelete"Socialism builds dependency, usually to the point of economic implosion. It fails. By its nature, it cannot succeed, unless human nature can be changed...." It certainly does.
"FROM each according to his abilities, TO each according to his needs," delivers a nation filled with gluttons with chronically bad backs.
Human nature is ineluctable and WILL NOT change.
Fact is, socialism is designed to deliver the grinding poverty it reliably does.
