58% of Swiss Vote to Ban Minarets (the towers above Mosques) in Switzerland...

This is very welcome news!

The Swiss people voted to ban minarets (those towers, or spires above Mosques) in Switzerland, by a whopping 58% of Swiss voters!

The Wall Street Journal reported it this way, “Swiss voters Sunday approved a ban on the construction of new minarets on mosques, defying appeals from the government to reject the proposal and raising the specter of a new round of tensions in Europe concerning the role of Islam on the Continent.

“The vote highlights the persistent conflict over the integration of Europe's growing Muslim population into civil society...”

“...The Swiss voted strongly for the ban, with 58% of votes in favor of the initiative and 42% against. Until about a month ago, polls had predicted voters would solidly reject the ban...”

  1. Maybe the US & other nations should follow Swiss style direct democracy?

The Swiss just voted to ban minarets on mosques and this is a great exercise of their unique form of direct democracy regardless of your views on the subject. But my question is why do the Swiss get to overrule their politicians and parliament and here in the US, we don’t have that right?

Let’s bring Swiss style direct democracy to the United States so Americans can vote on the Wall Street bailouts, government health care, whether to audit or abolish the FED, or require Congress declare war before we invade another country. Read why Switzerland is free and America is not and help restore citizen control over the US government and Congress currently under control of special interests. http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig/holland9.1.1.html

  2. I do like Initiative and Referendum, they have it in California, but pure or direct democracy is generally, as Ben Franklin said it was, "Four wolves and a sheep deciding on what's for dinner."

You need to have a Constitution firmly in place that regulates/LIMITS government action, even that proscribed by ballot initiatives....the people can enact things that violate other's basic rights and that can't be allowed.

Our major problem is that bit by bit the federal government has thrown off the chains of the Bill of Rights and doesn't consider the U.S. Constitution's LIMITS on government action any more.

    THAT's a HUGE problem.

I do think it's great that the Swiss have stood up to save their civilization and their way of life.

  3. I have been in communication w/people in Switzerland. I believe the situation there is far more complex than is being generally reported. You might want to do some additional research before jumping to a conclusion which fits your narrative. Or not.

  4. The Swisss people DID indeeed vote 58% to 42% to ban Minarets, to-Jimmy Olson)....and there's NOTHING bigoted about that move.

Islam, NOT just "radicalized Islam" is incompatible with Western Civilization.

Check out Robert Spencer's fascinating book, Stealth Jihad: http://www.amazon.com/Stealth-Jihad-Radical-Subverting-America/dp/1596985569 to see why.

Geert Wilders dares to merely tell the truth and the Islamo-nazis seek to kill him....need I say more?
