"Decade of Fire" is a Film of Flaws...

PBS to Air Documentary About the Bronx, DECADE OF FIRE
.
.

The film "Decade of Fire," that's being aired on PBS, seeks to blame the Bronx fire storm of the 1970s on "City government policies that left that borough...unprotected."

THAT...is a LIE.

The truth is that the Bronx, Harlem and Central Brooklyn have long had some of the busiest and best Fire Companies in the City and they certainly did back then!

By comparison, Staten Island, a borough roughly equivalent in area to the Bronx, had about half the Bronx's fire protection...and that was more than sufficient for that relatively low crime, low fire activity borough.

In his excellent book, "The Fires: How a Computer Formula, Big Ideas, and the Best of Intentions Burned Down New York City - and Determined the Future of Cities" (https://www.amazon.com/…/1594485062/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_W5…), Joe Flood chronicled how the RAND Corporation DID eliminate the 2nd sections of many of the City's busiest Fire Units, as the fiscal crisis broke over New York City, BUT that occurred in the mid 1970s, well into and even toward the end of that disastrous period.

Vincent Dunn, Thomas Kearney, Charlie McCarthy and others can speak to that firsthand.

Policies DON'T create behaviors, individuals DO.

There WERE indeed some Liberal city policies that inadvertently created incentives for arson.

At the time, insurance let an owner insure a property for whatever value the owner was willing to pay the premiums on. In that way, some unscrupulous store owners and landlords were able to insure their properties for far more than their market value. That was a disastrous policy and it was subsequently changed.

The black and Hispanic residents of the Bronx were NOT blamed for these arson abuses by store owners, certainly not within the FDNY & NYPD.

City welfare offices also had signs that anyone burned out of their residence would get $3,000 relocation money and be placed at the front of the line for the new public housing erected during the 1960s. Compounding that, the Red Cross, tasked with relocating the fire victims, were instructed only offer aid to those whose places suffered fire damage. Smoke and water damage DIDN'T count. As a result, many buildings experienced multiple fires virtually overnight, until the entire structure was considered condemned due to fire damage.

Incentives DO NOT "make" people do things.

Just as unscrupulous, immoral PROPERTY OWNERS saw profit in those flawed insurance laws, immoral, unscrupulous PEOPLE saw profit/advantage in being burned out of their apartments.

Everybody DIDN'T do it.

Blaming policies fashioned for a more moral and decent bygone age, for the selfish, destructive actions of some immoral people is hideously wrong.

It's the PEOPLE, NOT the POLICIES, or the PLACE.

The problem with the mass migration to New York City from the Deep South and Puerto Rico during the 50s and 60s was that it brought in an influx of very poor people, with very few skills that translated into New York's economy.

The result was that areas like central Brooklyn, the Bronx and other areas, were "ghettofied," resulting in compact areas with densely congested poverty, that bred unprecedented dysfunction and destruction.

It's a sad, but very true observation, that the urban dysfunction and destruction of that and subsequent eras is overwhelmingly the fault of PEOPLE...not any POLICIES.

I only WISH it could be said, "That isn't so."

The NBA's China Problem...

Many in the U.S. are condemning the NBA for trying to mollify China, after Houston's GM, Daryl Morey tweeted, "Stand for freedom. Stand with Hong Kong!"

Trying to mollify China is good business, especially since China already has more NBA fans than America has people.

The NBA's Commissioner, Adam Silver has actually doubled down on Houston Rockets' GM Daryl Morey's sentiments, in saying, "Values of equality, respect and freedom of expression have long defined the NBA — and will continue to do so. As an American-based basketball league operating globally, among our greatest contributions are these values of the game...."

"It is inevitable that people around the world — including from America and China — will have different viewpoints over different issues. It is not the role of the NBA to adjudicate those differences. However, the NBA will not put itself in a position of regulating what players, employees and team owners say or will not say on these issues. We simply could not operate that way."

The NBA has refused to fire, nor even sanction Daryl Morey over, perhaps the most expensive tweet in history.

Many players, coaches and owners, most notably Houston's Tilman Fertitta, who panicked, then tweeted that Morey didn’t speak for the Rockets, while allegedly making Morey delete his initial tweet and Russell Westbrook, among others who've offered immediate apologias to China, expressing how much NBA players live playing in China, while others, like Steve Kerr and LeBron James have remained uncharacteristically quiet.

THOSE are NOT a principled stands.

The L.A. Times acknowledged, "The People’s Republic of China is the land of opportunity for many American businesses, with its vast and fast-growing middle class. But doing business there often entails many compromises, some of them painful, including sacrificing some trade secrets, enduring unfair competition from government-owned rivals and abiding by behavioral rules set by a repressive regime.

"The potential for enormous profits in China is enough to persuade many U.S. businesses to park their values and principles at the departure gate. But this week, the National Basketball Assn. has defied pressure from the Chinese government, businesses and fans to smack down a team executive who’d offended China with a politically charged tweet. Considering the stakes involved, that’s a brave and welcome move."

Those "compromises," all that, "sacrificing trade secrets, enduring unfair competition from government-owned rivals and abiding by behavioral rules set by a repressive regime," is what the current administration has been fighting over, in what an all too often China-complicit U.S. media has called, "A trade war," as though the U.S. is wrong to demand fair trade.

Sadly none of this unprincipled moral wrangling is at all surprising, in fact, it's been par for the course in America for a long time. Adam Silver's stand is all the more refreshing.

China makes money off the NBA and they're in economic chaos right now. So, it WOULDN'T take all that much courage for the NBA to stand against China's tyranny and authoritarianism, but it DOES take principle.

Many IN the NBA apparently have none.

HOWEVER, Adam Silver and the NBA leadership HAVE shown real principle and moral courage in the face of this conflict.

It's been the same with traditional Islam. Sharia Law makes homosexuality and female adultery death penalty bounces and yet...few on the Left in the U.S. dare criticize Islam for these things.

I'd like to give those Americans credit for "tolerance and inclusion," BUT it's really more about their "moral cowardice" and THAT is America's real problem today.

Thibault of Lyon...

Last April, we saw a robot (Colossus) extinguish the interior fire in the Notre Dame Cathedral, now a French paraplegic known only as "Thibault of Lyon" has become the first human to use a mind-controlled exoskeleton to walk. (https://www.theguardian.com/…/paralysed-man-walks-using-min…)

Thibault trained for months, harnessing his brain signals to control a computer-simulated avatar to perform basic movements before using the robotic device to walk.

Researchers described the trial results as a breakthrough, despite the fact that the doctors who conducted the trial acknowledge the device is still years away from being publicly available. Still, it does seem to have the potential to offer dramatic improvements to a patients’ quality of life and autonomy.

Four years ago, Thibault of Lyon's life was permanently changed when he fell 40ft from a balcony, severing his spinal cord and leaving him paralysed from the shoulders down.

“When you are in my position, when you can’t do anything with your body … I wanted to do something with my brain,” Thibault said.
He trained using a video game avatar system to acquire the skills needed to operate the exoskeleton and had to relearn natural movements from scratch. “I can’t go home tomorrow in my exoskeleton but I’ve got to a point where I can walk. I walk when I want and I stop when I want,” Thibault said.

Currently, cervical spinal cord injuries leave about 20% of patients paralyzed in all four limbs and is the most severe injury of its kind.

Alim Louis Benabid, professor emeritus at Grenoble and lead author of the study published in the Lancet Neurology journal, noted that, “The brain is still capable of generating commands that would normally move the arms and legs, there’s just nothing to carry them out.”

Like all technology robotics offers both promise and peril as the emergence of AI and robotics will transform both the job market and our world.

Social Awkwardness is a Harrowing Problem...

Bronx Zoo Woman Who Got In With Lion Drops Rap On Instagram While Police Hunt Her
.
.

I mentioned the "Incels" in an earlier post, a gaggle of dysfunctional males who think women not wanting to date them because they're antisocial, unattractive and emotionally unstable is "oppression," so to prove that this disease is not gender specific, today I offer Mayah Autry (https://www.unilad.co.uk/…/bronx-zoo-woman-who-got-in-with…/) and Michelle Kolts (https://nypost.com/…/florida-woman-busted-with-two-dozen-h…/).

Mayah Autry a/k/a "Queen Empress Myah Laree Israelite" (seriously, what did you expect) has recently been arrested over warrants stemming from her recently hopping into the lion's enclosure at the Bronx Zoo (she must REALLY like cats)...and after taunting the Police online. Sounds like a plan.

Meanwhile, Michelle Kolts is the Florida Woman, who was recently arrested with a storehouse of pipe bombs and other weaponry in her family's abode (that means home, for all my Leftist friends). She was obsessed with Columbine and other mass shootings, according to her family. It seems Ms. Kolts is trying to expand the infamous Twitter meme "Forida Man," which sports the bizarrely criminal things done by the ubiquitous "Florida Man," with accounts like, "Florida man arrested after throwing incendiary device into impound lot and setting his own car on fire," or, "Florida man arrested after telling neighbors he was going to kill them all with kindness. Turns out "Kindness" was the name of his machete."

Good times.

Ms. Kolts' parents no claims she suffers from "autism." This is a problem. Suddenly autism and Asperger's syndrome are being used as umbrella terms to cover any and every human dysfunction. This does a great disservice to those actually suffering from those problems.

Anyway, in case folks thought I was just bashing dysfunctional guys...here's a bit of a counterbalance.

Putting the DICK Back in Dictator

Just when you sort of stopped wondering about Michael Bloomberg's sanity...he goes out and PROVES he really, REALLY is insane. (https://nationalinterest.org/…/bloomberg-defends-china-xi-j…)

The truly frightening thing about this is, "HOW many other members of America's political-media class think the SAME way?" I'm betting...a LOT.

On the September 27th airing of Firing Line, former New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg made the odd assertion that China's President Xi Jinping is "not a dictator" and insisted the Chinese Communist Party listens to its constituents.

The comments come in the wake of the former New York mayor's announcement of an economic forum in Beijing this November.

Bloomberg defended China's ruling communist regime citing its handling of pollution and environmental policy, claiming that it is responding to the needs of citizens. The former Mayor's comments come amid months of violent protest in Hong Kong and international outcry about the oppression of Chinese Muslims.

"The Communist Party wants to stay in power in China and they listen to the public," Bloomberg said. "When the public says ‘I can't breathe the air,' Xi Jinping is not a dictator. He has to satisfy his constituents, or he's not going to survive."

"He's not a dictator?" Hoover asked, incredulously. "He doesn't have a vote, he doesn't have a democracy. He's not held accountable by voters. Is the check on him just a revolution?"

"No," replied Bloomberg, "he has a constituency to answer to. You're not going to have a revolution. No government survives without the will of the majority of its people."

Hmmmm, ever hear of Adolph Hitler, Josef Stalin, or Mao tse Tung? They didn't respond to the will of the people AND they were very adept at ferreting out..."dissidents" and "agitators."

No participatory democratic process. CHECK

No Constitution to rein in government. CHECK

Autocratic control. CHECK

Yup, that's a dictatorship alright.

Which all goes to prove that Mike Bloomberg is just a DICK!

"Amateur" Athletics and Its Antiquated Feudal System...

Image result for College Amateur sports

California has done a LOT of things wrong. It's led the nation in confiscatory tax rates, an oppressive gasoline tax, horrific social policies, but its recent move, allowing College athletes to profit from their images (ie. endorsing products, signing autographs, etc.) ISN'T one of them. (https://www.latimes.com/…/college-athlete-endorsement-deals…)

The recent CA. bill doesn't have Colleges paying student athletes, as many mistakenly think. It merely allows kids to make money off their own images in outside endeavors (ie. signing autographs, having their images on video games, endorsement deals, etc)

College sports SHOULDN'T exist.

They've served as an unofficial, unpaid minor league for decades.

The schools make a mint off athletes (in football and basketball) who SHOULD HAVE a paid minor league system.

College sports and the "student athlete," are anachronisms born in the early 20th Century. They were already obsolete by the 1960's. Colleges SHOULDN'T be in the sports business. They SHOULD be solely in the education business.

The best players only choose College because they've had to.

THANKFULLY, there are now Developmental Leagues and International Leagues, so today's players don't have to get abused by these institutions any more.

These kids were NEVER offered an education. As far back as the 50s people used to joke about College athletes "majoring in basket weaving." College sports is a scam in which workers (the athletes) are abused by wealthy, powerful institutions. Until and even through today, College sports has been a feudal system in which the serfs (athletes) make money exclusively for these greedy institutions that STILL refuse to share any of those proceeds.

Big time College sports is a corrupt machine. It made money off these players and has usually given them nothing in return.

It's existed as a non-paid minor League.

Folks who don't get this, should read about Steve Prefontaine (the last great American distance runner), who waged a non stop war with the AAU & NCAA until his untimely death in 1975 at the age of 25.

The NCAA has created a feudal system, in which workers (athletes) aren't paid.

A scholarship that rarely allows these kids to pursue a degree in 4 years is NOT compensation.

People arguing that universities should keep the BILLIONS made through College sports, are like those who side with BILLIONAIRE owners, over MILLIONAIRE players.

If such people want to know the REAL enemies of the worker, the TRUE supporters of worker exploitation are, all they need is a mirror.

A "free education" ISN'T compensation, at all in line with the value big name athletes bring to schools.

Those BILLIONS in revenues should be split 50/50 and NOT with all 'student athletes' but the ones who bring in that cash.

The money brought into Duke University by Duke Men's Basketball should legally have at least half going to the Duke Men's Basketball team. Zion Williams, RJ Barrett, etc brought that money in.

College sports SHOULD return to the unwatchable TRUE student athletics, the accounting major who "sometimes" shoots hoops, the pre Med students who enjoy a rousing game of pigskin on a Saturday.

Sure, it WOULD NOT BE televised and the schools would not make money off that product, but the REAL athletes could play in paid minor leagues in football, basketball, etc. that would be televised.

Sports fans WOULD watch Developmental League games with the likes of Zion and RJ if those players had to spend say 2 years in the minors before playing in the major leagues.

Our Internationalist, Corporate "News" Media...

6 Corporations Control 90% of America's Media
(https://amp.businessinsider.com/these-6-corporations-contro…)

In the 1980s, more than fifty companies owned the majority of television and radio stations and networks. By 2000, just six corporations had ownership of most American media (CBS Corporation, Comcast, Time Warner, 21st Century Fox formerly News Corporation, Viacom, and The Walt Disney Company), and TODAY just five dominate the industry: Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany and Viacom.

There is no "News" disseminated by this "News Media." 90% of "news" content today is opinion. ALL political coverage is OPINION/Commentary.

These companies have an agenda, an agenda set by a global financial elite (led by international bankers and the leaders of multinational conglomerates, like the 6 named conglomerates above).

That's why there's no longer a pro American outlook in our mass media and why this media has no issue with our biggest threat, China and a big issue with Orthodox Christian, Nationalist Russia, which opposes the Globalism/One Worldism pushed by this media.

Believing in the propaganda promulgated by this media is extremely toxic and hazardous to our health.
