Jefferson Agreed With Virgil Goode!

Since Virgil Goode (R-Va) sounded the illegal immigration alarm as Kieth Ellison (D-MN) demanded to be sworn in on the Quran, many of the misguided folks on the Left have lambasted...Virgil Goode!

For what?!

For standing up for common sense and basic American principles?

Well, as it turns out, Christopher Hitchens has written a great piece about what Thomas Jefferson, who actually engaged America in its first foreign war AGAINST Muslim fanatics (the Barbary pirates).

As Hitchens notes, Ellison is not an adherent of true Islam, but a follower of Louis Farrakhans’s Nation of Islam (NOI), a group long repudiated by the world’s traditional Muslims.

In other words, the NOI is even too extreme for this extreme religion.

By 1786 America, now independent and without the benefit of British Naval protection found its ships being pirated en route to Europe, by what they then called “Mussulmen.”

Thousands of vessels were taken, and more than a million Europeans and Americans sold into slavery.

According to Hitchens, When Thomas Jefferson and John Adams “went to call on Tripoli's envoy to London, Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman. They asked him by what right he extorted money and took slaves in this way. As Jefferson later reported to Secretary of State John Jay, and to the Congress:

“The ambassador answered us that [the right] was founded on the Laws of the Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have answered their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Mussulman who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise.”

The Barbary wars bare a striking resemblance to the state-sponsored terrorism we face today.

Hitchens notes, “it was not until long after his death that The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth was publishable.

“Sometimes known as "the Jefferson Bible" for short, this consists of the four gospels of the New Testament as redacted by our third president with (literally) a razor blade in his hand.

“With this blade, he excised every verse dealing with virgin birth, miracles, resurrection, and other puerile superstition, thus leaving him (and us) with a very much shorter book.”

Jefferson expressed little but skepticism over Christianity, and almost certainly held “Mohamedism” in even lower regard.

Hitchens suggests that all new members of Congress be sworn in using the Jefferson Bible and since, in his words, “the Quran repeats and plagiarizes many passages of the New Testament, including some of the most fantastic and mythical ones,” why not take a Jeffersonian razor blade to that book as well?

Thanks JMK2006 - It was Hitchen's article in Slate, though.

HE, did some great historical research on the subject.

By the way - you've got a great blog over there at Jeremayakovka!

Hi, thanks. You credited Hitchens well.

You know the guys who lug the hoses up stairwells and down hallways, who make sure there are no kinks and that no debris falls on them? That's what blogging feels like. The Hitchenses are the guys working the nozzle while the rest of us keep it moving.

Hitchens and Steyn (http://www.steynonline.com/) are great and there are a few more like them.

BTW, I love the collection of foreign blogs you've linked to. Some real great ones.
